In the early morning hours of September 11, 2026, the life of Sophie Lee, a 27-year-old Black transgender woman, was tragically cut short in Baltimore, Maryland. Police responded to reports of gunfire in the Barclay neighborhood around 1:16 a.m. and found Lee with multiple gunshot wounds at the intersection of North Calvert and East 24th streets. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators believe that Lee was shot in a nearby alley before she made her way into the street.
Her purse was discovered two blocks away from where her body was found, though authorities have not confirmed if robbery was a motive in the attack.
Born and raised in Baltimore, Sophie Lee was a graduate of the Baltimore School of the Arts and an active and beloved member of the city's ballroom scene. Friends and community members remembered her as a mentor and a guiding presence within the ballroom community, a cultural space that has long provided support and a sense of family for Black and transgender individuals. On her social media, Lee identified as a "girl who likes girls" and was an advocate for the inclusion of trans women within lesbian communities. She was known for her love of dance, Black Pride events, and music from the 70s and 80s. In the spring of 2026, she was proudly named Best New Overall Mother in the ballroom scene.
