In the early morning hours of December 4, 2022, the life of 19-year-old Jaymyra Burrell, a pregnant woman from Baltimore, Maryland, was tragically cut short. Responding to a shooting report around 3 a.m. in the 5600 block of Woodmont Avenue, police discovered Burrell suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite being rushed to a hospital, she and her unborn child, a girl she had named Zuri, did not survive.
An investigation revealed she had been shot nine times.
Family and friends described Burrell as a vibrant and caring individual who was actively involved in her church's youth ministry and served as a mentor. They were in the midst of planning her baby shower, a celebration that tragically turned into preparations for her funeral. Her loved ones remembered her as the 'life of the party' who brought smiles to everyone she met.
The investigation into her death soon focused on her 22-year-old boyfriend, Malik McCormick. For months, McCormick remained at large, prompting public appeals from city officials for information leading to his capture. The search came to an end on July 1, 2023, when he was arrested during a traffic stop in Charleston, West Virginia. Authorities discovered an outstanding warrant for Burrell's murder and extradited him back to Baltimore. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and various handgun violations. According to charging documents, a witness informed investigators that McCormick had admitted to the killing.
In January 2025, Malik McCormick pleaded guilty to the first-degree murder of Jaymyra Burrell. The guilty plea spared Burrell's family the additional trauma of a trial. On February 19, 2025, he was sentenced for the crime. During the sentencing, Burrell's family delivered emotional victim impact statements, expressing their profound loss. McCormick also briefly addressed the court, apologizing for his actions. He received a sentence of 50 years in prison.
