On the evening of September 6, 2018, Tracey Elizabeth Carrington, a 25-year-old former Morgan State University basketball player, was fatally shot in Baltimore, Maryland. The incident occurred as she was getting into her car after leaving a bar on Overlea Avenue. A suspect approached her and shot her multiple times before fleeing the scene in a vehicle. The shooting was not random; police believed Carrington was specifically targeted.
There was no evidence of robbery or any other crime, as the assailant came directly up to her, fired, and left.
At the time of her death, Carrington was slated to be a prosecution witness in a double homicide case. She had witnessed the killings of two men at a Towson apartment complex in April of that year. The two men charged in that case were later convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 40 years in prison. Despite the clear connection, the Baltimore County Police Department did not immediately confirm that her role as a witness was the motive for her murder.
For years, the case remained unsolved, leaving her family searching for answers. The break in the investigation came in 2022 when a childhood friend of Kenneth Davis told police that Davis had buried two guns in his backyard on the night of Carrington's murder. This led to Davis being identified as the primary suspect. In May 2023, Kenneth Davis, then 32, was arrested and charged with Carrington's murder.
Kenneth Davis was a friend of the two brothers convicted in the double homicide case that Carrington was set to testify in. In April 2024, following a four-day trial, a Baltimore County jury found Kenneth Davis Jr. guilty of first-degree murder in the shooting death of Tracey Carrington. He was also found guilty of using a firearm in a violent crime, possessing a firearm with a felony conviction, and witness intimidation.
