In the early morning hours of August 20, 2023, the life of 26-year-old Kashay Tanae Davis, a Black female from Baltimore, Maryland, was irrevocably altered. In what her family would later describe as a tragic case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, Kashay found herself in the 800 block of Guilford Avenue in the Mount Vernon neighborhood when gunfire erupted. The incident, which occurred around 3:05 a.m.
in a parking lot, was a double shooting that also involved 25-year-old Navontay Whitener.
When police arrived at the scene, they discovered both Kashay and Navontay suffering from gunshot wounds. While Navontay Whitener was pronounced dead at the scene, Kashay was rushed to a local hospital, clinging to life. For a day, she fought for survival, but her injuries proved too severe. On August 21, 2023, Kashay Tanae Davis was pronounced dead.
The Baltimore Police Department's Homicide Unit is investigating the double homicide. Surveillance footage from a nearby convenience store captured the chaos in the aftermath of the shooting, showing people running and the arrival of law enforcement. However, despite the ongoing investigation, no arrests have been made in connection with the deaths of Kashay Davis and Navontay Whitener, and police have not publicly identified any suspects. Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward. In the wake of this tragedy, a fundraiser was established to support Kashay's grieving family.
