A cosmetologist with a passion for doing hair, she was a devoted mother, daughter, and friend, known for her love of laughter, dancing, and spending quality time with her family.
On May 3, 2021, officers responded to a call at a residence in the 2800 block of Clifton Park Terrace.
There, they found Brittaney Hayes-Smith unresponsive on the living room floor, having suffered a fatal gunshot wound. At the time of her death, the home was occupied by her estranged husband, Gerald Smith, from whom she had moved out approximately two months prior. The investigation revealed that in the early morning hours before her body was discovered, Brittaney was last seen leaving a friend's house and getting into a vehicle with Gerald Smith. A witness later reported seeing Smith's car parked in front of the residence and hearing four gunshots.
The investigation into Brittaney's death quickly connected to another homicide that had occurred just a day earlier. On May 2, 2021, Marvis Pollock was found shot to death in the 2600 block of West Fairmount Avenue. Ballistic evidence from both crime scenes matched, and surveillance footage and cell phone data placed Gerald Smith at the location of Pollock's murder. Following the discovery of his wife's body, Smith fled to Atlanta but was apprehended and extradited back to Baltimore.
