On the cold winter night of January 20, 1991, in Stanford, Kentucky, a veteran police officer's life was tragically cut short. Patrolman Gary Elmer Kidwell, a 41-year-old male with 20 years of dedicated service to the Stanford Police Department, was conducting a routine traffic stop near the intersection of John Street and Goshen Road at approximately 11:15 pm.
The man he pulled over was someone he was familiar with, an individual known to have several prior arrests related to drinking.
As Patrolman Kidwell approached the vehicle, the driver suddenly opened fire with a. 357 caliber handgun, fatally wounding the officer. The suspect then fled the scene, sparking a manhunt. His freedom was short-lived, however, as he was soon located by a neighboring law enforcement agency. A shootout ensued before the suspect was finally apprehended.
The man responsible for Patrolman Kidwell's death was ultimately convicted for the murder and sentenced to serve 25 years to life in prison. Over the years, he has been considered for parole but has been denied on multiple occasions, including in 2003, 2012, and 2020, ensuring he remains incarcerated for the violent act that ended a long and respected career in law enforcement.
