On an autumn evening in Waldorf, Maryland, 18-year-old Reuel Hicks met his untimely death in a violent encounter that stemmed from a drug deal gone wrong. The fatal shooting occurred on October 26, 2016, behind a movie theater on Mall Circle, a place typically associated with entertainment and leisure. Hicks, a male resident of Waldorf, was in the company of several friends when the deadly confrontation unfolded.
The sequence of events leading to the tragedy began with a prearranged
meeting between Hicks and Deavan Quindel Jefferson, a 19-year-old from Baltimore. The purpose of their meeting was a drug transaction. During their interaction, the situation escalated dramatically when Jefferson produced a handgun and shot Hicks. After the shooting, Jefferson fled the scene on foot, leaving Hicks critically wounded. He was quickly flown to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Law enforcement's response was swift. Charles County Sheriff's officers arrived at the scene within minutes and were able to get a description of the suspect. An officer on patrol spotted a person matching the description, who was later identified as Jefferson, and took him into custody. The ensuing investigation confirmed Jefferson's involvement in the shooting. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder.
During the trial of Deavan Quindel Jefferson, the court heard conflicting accounts of the tragic event. The prosecution presented evidence that Jefferson had intended to purchase marijuana from Hicks, but an altercation broke out, leading to the fatal shooting. In his defense, Jefferson's legal team argued that he had acted in self-defense, claiming that Hicks and his friends had intended to rob him. The jury, however, found Jefferson guilty. On July 17, 2017, a Charles County Circuit Court judge sentenced Deavan Quindel Jefferson, then 20 years old, to a total of 40 years in prison for the murder of Reuel Hicks and a related firearms charge.
