In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Bowie, Maryland, the promise of a new day was tragically shattered. Inside the Blue Sunday Bar and Grill, a dispute over money escalated into a horrific act of violence that would claim the lives of three men. One of the victims was Sherwood Morgan, a 46-year-old manager at the newly opened restaurant.
The events of January 29, 2017, unfolded after another manager, viewing the restaurant's surveillance footage remotely, witnessed a disturbing
scene and alerted the police. Authorities arrived at the Race Track Road establishment to find a grim tableau. Two men were already deceased, and a third, Sherwood Morgan, was critically injured. He was rushed to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to his wounds. The other victims were identified as Jin Chen, 27, and Xue Zou, 28, both owners of the restaurant.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on a disgruntled bartender, Karlief Moye, age 40. Police discovered that Moye had been embroiled in an ongoing dispute with the restaurant's management concerning his compensation. This disagreement apparently reached a fatal tipping point. As law enforcement closed in on Moye in a wooded area in Silver Spring, he turned a gun on himself, inflicting two non-fatal gunshot wounds.
Moye was taken into custody and subsequently charged with three counts of first-degree murder. The case against him was solidified by surveillance footage from inside the restaurant that captured the tragic events. In November 2018, Karlief Moye pleaded guilty to the murders and received three consecutive life sentences for his crimes. During the sentencing, the court heard emotional impact statements from the victims' families, including Sherwood Morgan's mother and brother, who spoke of their profound loss and the devastating impact his senseless death had on their family.
