On a Sunday morning in January 2017, the lives of three men were tragically cut short in what should have been the promising setting of a new restaurant. Xue Zou, a 28-year-old man, was one of three victims in a fatal shooting that occurred at the Blue Sunday Bar and Grill in Bowie, Maryland. The incident, which took place on January 29, also claimed the lives of 27-year-old Jin Chen and 46-year-old Sherwood Morgan.
Zou and Chen were co-owners of the establishment, and Morgan served as the general manager.
The violence erupted from a dispute over wages with an employee. Karlief Moye, a 42-year-old bartender at the restaurant, had been arguing with the owners about $2,100 he believed he was owed. The disagreement escalated, leading Moye to fatally shoot Zou, Chen, and Morgan. The brutal events were captured by the restaurant's surveillance system, which showed a manager discovering the bodies of his colleagues on the ground and promptly alerting the police.
After the shootings, Moye fled the scene, sparking a manhunt. He was later found in a wooded area suffering from two self-inflicted gunshot wounds. He survived his suicide attempt and was taken into custody.
In the subsequent legal proceedings, Karlief Moye pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder. During his sentencing, Moye expressed remorse to the victims' families, citing a traumatic brain injury from 2014 that he claimed had altered his personality. However, the court sentenced him to three consecutive life terms in prison for the murders. The case left the local community in shock and mourning for the three men whose lives were taken in a senseless act of violence.
