On a late December afternoon, the quiet of a Bowie, Maryland neighborhood was broken by the sound of gunfire. On December 28, 2023, at approximately 3:05 p.m., police responded to a report of a shooting in the 900 block of Saint Michaels Drive. Arriving at the scene, officers discovered 37-year-old Timothy Emmanuel Jones inside a vehicle, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The initial investigation into the death of the Washington, D.C.
man began with detectives from the Prince George's County Police Department's Homicide Unit working to identify a suspect and determine a motive for the shooting. As the investigation progressed, a reward of up to $25,000 was offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment in the case, a plea to the public for assistance in bringing closure to the sudden and violent death of Timothy Jones.
The breakthrough in the case came in early January 2024, when an arrest was made. On January 10, police announced that they had taken 18-year-old Harvey Barnes III of Upper Marlboro into custody. The preliminary investigation suggests that the fatal shooting occurred during a dispute between Barnes and Jones, who were known to have mutual acquaintances. Barnes has since been charged with first and second-degree murder, along with related charges, and is being held without bond.
