In the early hours of a Sunday morning in January 2017, a grim discovery was made at the Blue Sunday Bar and Grill in Bowie, Maryland, marking the tragic death of 27-year-old Jin Chen. Chen, a male, was found shot inside the restaurant he co-owned. He was not the only victim of the violence that shattered the quiet of the suburban town. Alongside him were his business partner, 28-year-old Xue Zou, and the restaurant's manager, 46-year-old Sherwood Morgan.
The gruesome scene was first
witnessed remotely by another manager who, after not receiving an expected call, checked the establishment's security footage. What he saw prompted an immediate call to the authorities. When police arrived at the restaurant on Race Track Road, they found two of the victims deceased and one in critical condition; that individual later succumbed to their injuries at a local hospital.
The investigation into the triple homicide quickly pointed to an employee of the newly opened restaurant. Karlief Moye, a 40-year-old bartender, was identified as the suspect. The motive for the killings appeared to stem from an ongoing financial dispute Moye had with the restaurant's management. Prosecutors stated that Moye believed he was owed approximately $2,100. Surveillance footage from inside the restaurant captured the moments leading up to the shooting, showing Moye entering a back office where the three victims were. He then pulled out a handgun and shot them before taking money from a desk and fleeing the scene.
A manhunt for Moye ensued, and as police closed in on him in a wooded area in Silver Spring, he shot himself twice in a failed suicide attempt. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for his non-life-threatening injuries. Following his recovery, Moye was charged with three counts of first-degree murder.
In court, Moye's defense argued that a traumatic brain injury he sustained in 2014 had altered his personality. However, in September 2018, Karlief Moye pleaded guilty to the three murders. During his sentencing in November 2018, he apologized to the families of his victims. The judge, calling Moye a 'cold and calculated individual,' sentenced him to three consecutive life terms in prison, ensuring he would spend the rest of his life behind bars for the violent end he brought to the lives of Jin Chen, Xue Zou, and Sherwood Morgan.
