In the winter of 2018, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of a Saturday morning in Bowie, Maryland, leaving a young man's life cut tragically short. Derrick Whittaker, a 27-year-old Black male from Capitol Heights, was fatally shot in the upper body on January 20th in the 1200 block of Pennypacker Lane. In the immediate aftermath, before Bowie police could arrive at the scene around 11:45 a.m., Whittaker was privately transported to a local hospital.
Despite the swift medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The Prince George's County Police Department quickly took over the investigation, classifying Whittaker's death as a homicide. From the outset, detectives asserted that the shooting was not a random act of violence, suggesting that Whittaker may have been specifically targeted.
