In the quiet community of Lusby, Maryland, a domestic tragedy unfolded on the evening of April 28, 2017, ending the life of 34-year-old Tanya Louise Harley. That night, law enforcement responded to a call for an injured person at a residence on Rawhide Road. Upon their arrival, they discovered Tanya Harley deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. She was found lying in the threshold between the master bedroom and bathroom, with her purse still wrapped around her arm.
The immediate
suspect in the shooting was identified as her 38-year-old husband, James W. Harley Jr. He had fled the scene before deputies arrived, prompting an active search by law enforcement. The grim discovery of Tanya Harley's body was made by a neighbor and the couple's young son. After the shooting, James left the home, leaving his son behind, who was later found wandering through the neighborhood by residents. The following day, James W. Harley Jr. turned himself into the Maryland State Police in Leonardtown and was taken into custody.
The investigation into Tanya Harley's death revealed a troubled marriage. Court documents indicated that the relationship was strained, with allegations of extramarital affairs. Tanya had previously sought a temporary protective order against her husband, stating that he had threatened to put her in a coffin. Text messages from James containing threats against his wife were also discovered by investigators. Prosecutors would later argue that the murder was premeditated, citing a conversation Tanya had with a family member a week before her death in which she expressed fear that her husband would kill her.
James W. Harley Jr. was charged with first-degree murder, second-degree assault, and use of a firearm in a felony/violent crime. In May 2018, to spare his young son from having to testify against him, he pleaded guilty to first-degree premeditated murder. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison. During the sentencing, prosecutors portrayed him as a man obsessed with controlling his wife. In January 2024, a judge denied his request for a sentence reduction, citing concerns for the safety and well-being of the community. James Harley is serving his life sentence at the North Branch Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Maryland.
