In a tragic turn of events, the life of 29-year-old Alexis Schuler of Washington, D.C. was cut short in January 2025. A mother of three, Schuler was reported missing by her mother on January 14, 2025, after not being seen since January 10th. The search for her ended in heartbreak on January 19th when her remains were discovered concealed within the Capitol Heights, Maryland, home of her 30-year-old boyfriend, Devontae Gray.
Gray is also the father of Schuler's oldest child.
The investigation into Schuler's disappearance led police to Gray's residence, where they had been called for domestic disputes in the months leading up to her death. In fact, Gray himself had contacted police on January 9th, claiming to be having a 'domestic' issue with Schuler and mentioning he had a gun. When officers conducted an initial welfare check on January 14th after she was reported missing, they noted a 'weird' smell but attributed it to the home's uncleanliness and left. However, after obtaining a search warrant, investigators returned on January 19th. This time, their search uncovered a grisly scene. Schuler's body was found in a 'makeshift tomb' under a staircase, hidden behind a newly constructed wall of drywall and faux bricks. She had been placed in a plastic tub, and Gray had allegedly used concrete, cinder blocks, dirt, and straw to conceal her remains. An autopsy later confirmed that she had been shot.
Devontae Gray was arrested at the scene and subsequently confessed to murdering Alexis Schuler, telling detectives he shot her during an argument. Surveillance footage from Gray's home showed him bringing construction materials into the house in the days after Schuler was last seen, and while Schuler was seen entering the residence, she was never seen leaving. Gray has been charged with first and second-degree murder and is being held without bond. The case has drawn attention to the serious issue of domestic violence, with Schuler's family urging the community to take such situations seriously to prevent similar tragedies.
