On a Saturday afternoon in June 2018, 25-year-old Michael Johnson was fatally shot in the 1600 block of Baker Street in West Baltimore. When police arrived at the scene near the Gilmor Homes housing development, they found Johnson on the ground, bleeding profusely from several gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he ultimately died from his injuries.
Investigators at the scene recovered eleven spent cartridge cases of two different
calibers,. 22 long and 9 mm Luger, indicating that two semiautomatic weapons were used in the attack. An autopsy later revealed that Michael Johnson had suffered three gunshot wounds and an additional graze wound. The nature of his wounds suggested he was shot from behind as he was attempting to flee from his assailants.
Detectives utilized surveillance footage from city police cameras and private businesses in the area to piece together the events of that afternoon. The video evidence showed two men in hoodies chasing Johnson, who appeared to be running for his life. This footage was instrumental in the investigation and subsequent legal proceedings.
One of the suspects, Douglass Dorsey, was identified and arrested. Following a trial, a jury in the Circuit Court for Baltimore City found Dorsey guilty of first-degree murder and related firearms offenses. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison, with an additional concurrent sentence of 20 years.
