In the late afternoon of October 8, 2018, a sense of unease shattered the residential calm of the 300 block of Highland Drive in Glen Burnie, Maryland. It was there, at approximately 3:57 p.m., that the life of 19-year-old Prateek Kumar was violently cut short. A male resident of Crownsville, Kumar was found by Anne Arundel County Police officers who were responding to reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered citizens attempting to provide first aid to the young man.
Despite their efforts, Kumar was pronounced dead at the scene by fire department personnel.
The investigation into Kumar's death quickly pointed to a targeted attack, with detectives from the Homicide Unit leading the inquiry. The scene, located at the Southgate Apartments, was meticulously processed by the Evidence Collection Unit, who gathered items of evidentiary value from the area, including from a Mercedes SUV with a windshield riddled with bullet holes. Investigators canvassed the neighborhood, identifying and interviewing several witnesses in an attempt to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting.
As the investigation unfolded, it was revealed that Prateek Kumar had been released from jail less than a month before his death. He had posted a $50,000 bond on September 19, 2018, while awaiting a November trial on misdemeanor weapons charges. Police believe that Kumar was known to his assailant or assailants, who were reported to have fled the scene in a dark-colored sedan. Despite the active and ongoing investigation and the belief that the incident was not random, no arrests have been made in connection with Kumar's murder. The Anne Arundel County Police Department has continued to appeal to the public for any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the case, which is now considered a cold case. His death was officially ruled a homicide by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
