On a late Friday afternoon in Glen Burnie, Maryland, the life of Darius Davon Matthews, a 29-year-old male, was brought to a sudden and violent end. The events of August 26, 2022, unfolded behind a liquor store on Crain Highway, where a dispute escalated to a fatal encounter. Earlier in the day, Matthews had been engaged in a verbal argument with an older man, an exchange that would tragically foreshadow the violence to come.
Later that afternoon, around 4:30 p.m., both men returned to
the parking lot of Clauss Liquors, and their argument reignited. This time, however, the confrontation took a deadly turn. The other man, identified as 70-year-old Gregory Lydell Siscoe, walked over to his vehicle, retrieved a 12-gauge Winchester rifle, and from across the parking lot, fired a single, fatal shot. When Anne Arundel County Police officers responded to reports of gunfire, they found Matthews on the pavement next to his red sedan, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Paramedics pronounced him deceased at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting proceeded swiftly. Officers located Siscoe at the scene, still holding the rifle, and took him into custody without delay. Surveillance footage from the area corroborated the events, capturing the earlier argument and the subsequent shooting. It was later revealed that Siscoe, a resident of Brooklyn Park, had a history connected to the location and had been previously ordered by a judge to stay away from the liquor store. The motive appeared to stem from the petty dispute, which Siscoe chose to resolve with gunfire.
Gregory Lydell Siscoe was charged in connection with the death of Darius Davon Matthews. In court, he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and the use of a handgun in a crime of violence. By entering the plea, Siscoe admitted his role in the senseless killing that stemmed from a verbal altercation. The State’s Attorney’s office announced it would seek a 30-year prison sentence for Siscoe, bringing a measure of legal closure to a case that ended a young man's life over a trivial disagreement.
