On the evening of October 14, 2020, Daynard Devere Johnson, a 40-year-old male resident of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, was found deceased in Hagerstown, Maryland. Shortly before 10:30 p.m., officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 300 block of Henry Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered Johnson on the sidewalk, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his head, chest, abdomen, and hand. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators believed the incident was a targeted attack.
The subsequent investigation led to the identification of several suspects. On October 29, 2020, Alexander Daniel Brooks, then 25, was apprehended in Ocean City, Maryland, by U.S. Marshals. He faced charges of first and second-degree murder, conspiracy, and numerous firearms offenses. Less than a month later, on November 16, 2020, a second suspect, 31-year-old Brock Jerome Smith of Hagerstown, was arrested in Greencastle, Pennsylvania. Smith was also charged with murder, conspiracy, and firearms offenses. The investigation suggested that Johnson's murder may have been in retaliation for the killing of Vance Trotman, an associate of the suspects, in September 2020.
A third suspect, Raymond Garfield Campbell III, also known as 'Uno,' remained a fugitive for several years. An arrest warrant for first-degree murder and related charges was issued for him in October 2020. His time on the run came to an end on March 21, 2024, when he was apprehended in Sacramento, California. Campbell was extradited back to Maryland to face the charges. In November 2025, a Circuit Court jury in Hagerstown convicted Campbell on 11 charges, including first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and assault.
The legal proceedings for the other individuals involved have also concluded. Alexander Daniel Brooks entered an Alford plea to first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison with all but 30 years suspended. Brock Jerome Smith also entered an Alford plea in connection with the case and is serving a prison sentence. Another man, William Shumaker, known as 'Will Will,' was also charged with murder in the case.
