On the evening of September 27, 2019, a day that should have been filled with celebration, the life of 19-year-old Alonzo Robinson Jr., a Black male, was tragically cut short in Hagerstown, Maryland. He had been attending a cookout to celebrate his father's birthday, an event that took a dark turn. An altercation erupted at the gathering, involving Robinson, another individual named Ayaga McKell, and a man named Juwan Campbell.
Later that same evening, the dispute escalated to fatal
violence at the intersection of Madison Avenue and West Washington Street. It was there that Alonzo Robinson Jr. was fatally shot. The celebration of a life's beginning became the scene of a life's untimely end, leaving a family to grapple with a sudden and devastating loss.
The investigation into Robinson's death led authorities to Juwan Campbell. On January 15, 2020, a criminal information was filed in the Circuit Court for Washington County, formally charging Campbell in connection with Robinson's murder. The wheels of justice began to turn, and on January 17, 2020, an attorney from the Office of the Public Defender entered his appearance on behalf of Campbell.
The legal proceedings that followed included a trial held from November 15-19, 2021. During the trial, the jury heard testimony about the altercation that occurred at the cookout prior to the shooting. The prosecution presented evidence, including electronic messages recovered from a mobile phone and testimony from an officer who detailed how he attributed a specific phone number to Juwan Campbell through communications with Ayaga McKell and another individual. The case, identified as C-21-CR-20-42, saw legal arguments over the admissibility of evidence and the questioning of witnesses. An appeal was later filed, addressing issues from a hearing on May 25, 2021, and rulings made during the trial.
