In the pre-dawn hours of October 18, 2020, in Baltimore, Maryland, the life of 18-year-old Nayely Paz was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence. She and her 19-year-old boyfriend, described as her high school sweetheart, had recently graduated and were embarking on their adult lives. Paz dreamed of becoming a nurse, a testament to her caring nature. On that particular night, the couple was driving to get some ice cream, a simple outing that would end in tragedy.
While driving in the 1100 block of Horners Lane in the city's Northeast District, they encountered another vehicle, a mid-size Cadillac SUV, with its high beams on. After her boyfriend rolled down his window and asked the other driver to dim the bright lights, the situation escalated with terrifying speed. The driver of the SUV responded by opening fire on the couple's car, striking both Paz and her boyfriend.
Both were hit by the gunfire. Nayely Paz succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving at a local hospital. Her boyfriend was also seriously wounded but survived, though his family reported he was unable to move from the waist down following the shooting. In the immediate aftermath, friends and family gathered, creating a makeshift memorial of flowers, balloons, and candles at the site of the shooting. They remembered her as a beautiful person, inside and out, and a friend to everyone.
To this day, the murder of Nayely Paz remains unsolved, and the case is considered cold. Baltimore City Police homicide detectives obtained surveillance footage showing the suspect's vehicle but have not been able to identify the person or persons responsible. No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. Metro Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $8,000 for any information that leads to an arrest and charges in the case. The family and community continue to hope for justice for a young woman whose promising future was violently stolen.
