In the early morning hours of November 9, 2022, the life of 19-year-old Willians Anderson Alberto Cruz was tragically cut short in a wooded area in Silver Spring, Maryland. Just before 4 a.m., Montgomery County Police responded to reports of gunfire in the 100 block of Colony Road in Piney Branch. Upon arrival, they discovered a chaotic scene with three adult males suffering from gunshot wounds. Two of the men were transported to local hospitals in serious but stable condition.
A further search of the area led officers to a wooded area behind the residences where they found Cruz, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by police and Fire Rescue personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene. A fourth man who was with the group was found uninjured.
The investigation into the homicide quickly pointed to a motive rooted in gang retribution. Detectives determined that the shooting was carried out by members of the MS-13 gang as retaliation for defaced gang graffiti near the parking lot where the victims had been gathered. Willians Anderson Alberto Cruz and his friends, who were simply listening to music by a vehicle, were mistakenly targeted and were not involved in the defacing of the graffiti. The victims and the suspects had no prior personal connection, making the attack a random act of violence fueled by mistaken identity and gang territoriality.
Within a month of the fatal shooting, Montgomery County Police arrested four suspects in connection with the murder. The individuals taken into custody were 19-year-old Junior Francisco Del-Cid, 23-year-old Elmer Lopez-Cortez, 24-year-old Jonathan Adonys Leon-Chacon, and 18-year-old Elvin Manuel Guzman-Machato. The investigation revealed that Del-Cid and Lopez-Cortez were the gunmen who opened fire on the unsuspecting group, while Guzman-Machato and Leon-Chacon waited in a getaway vehicle. The four men were identified as members of the La Mara Salvatrucha gang.
The legal proceedings that followed brought a measure of justice for the killing of Willians Anderson Alberto Cruz. In August 2024, a jury convicted Junior Francisco Del-Cid, Elmer Lopez-Cortez, and Elvin Guzman-Machado on multiple charges, including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and participation in a criminal organization resulting in death. This was a landmark case for Montgomery County, marking the first time a conviction was secured on the charge of participation in a criminal organization resulting in death. Subsequently, Del-Cid and Lopez-Cortez were each sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, in addition to three consecutive life sentences plus 105 years. Elvin Guzman-Machado was also convicted and awaited sentencing. The fourth co-defendant, Jonathan Leon-Chacon, was still pending trial for his alleged role in the incident.
