In the quiet suburbs of Greenville, South Carolina, a tragic story unfolded on the night of April 2, 2003, culminating in the death of 34-year-old Antonio Jose 'Joe' Sapinoso, a respected Greenville County Deputy Sheriff of Asian/Pacific Islander descent. Sapinoso, who was born in the Philippines, had just returned to his home on Chetsworth Lane after finishing his shift.
As he exited his patrol car, he was ambushed by Kamell Delshawn Evans, the ex-boyfriend of his sister, Christina Sapinoso Rodriquez.
Evans, armed with a handgun, disarmed Deputy Sapinoso and used the officer's own handcuffs to restrain him. He then forced Sapinoso inside the home, where a tense and lengthy standoff with law enforcement began. Inside, Evans also took Sapinoso's father, Antonio L. Sapinoso, hostage. For nearly five hours, SWAT team members and negotiators communicated with Evans, attempting to de-escalate the volatile situation. During the ordeal, Sapinoso's mother and his seven-year-old nephew were also in the house, hiding in an upstairs closet.
In the early morning hours, negotiations appeared to be progressing, with Evans telling police he was going to surrender. However, without warning, the situation took a horrific turn. Evans opened fire, fatally shooting both Deputy Sapinoso and his father multiple times in the head. Following the fatal shots, Evans surrendered to the SWAT team that had surrounded the residence. He was taken into custody without further incident.
Kamell D. Evans, who was 26 years old at the time of the incident, was arrested and faced a litany of charges for his actions. These included two counts of murder for the deaths of Antonio 'Joe' Sapinoso and his father, as well as charges for kidnapping and pointing a firearm. The subsequent legal proceedings found Evans guilty of the heinous crimes. He was convicted for the murders and was ultimately sentenced to death for his role in the tragic deaths of the father and son. The community and the Greenville County Sheriff's Office mourned the loss of a dedicated officer and his father, their lives cut short in a senseless act of violence.
