Deputy Sheriff Eli Pittman, aged 35, tragically lost his life on April 29, 1906, in Greenville, South Carolina. Deputy Pittman was attempting to arrest a man he believed to be intoxicated when the incident occurred. The suspect, who had previously made threats against Deputy Pittman, shot him as he approached. Despite being wounded, Deputy Pittman managed to return fire, fatally wounding the suspect.
