In the quiet town of Summerton, South Carolina, the life of 18-year-old Johnté Shaheed Holliday was tragically cut short in the early morning hours of February 6, 2014. Holliday, a male who had recently returned to his native Clarendon County from North Carolina in search of a job to support his pregnant girlfriend, was at his uncle's home on Furse Road when the fatal encounter occurred.
Believing them to be acquaintances of his uncle, Holliday opened the door to two men just after midnight.
Once inside, the friendly facade dissolved as the men brandished weapons and demanded money. The situation quickly escalated, and in the ensuing chaos, shots were fired. Holliday was struck twice in the chest. His uncle was also present during the home invasion and was reportedly struck by one of the assailants before hearing the gunshots that would claim his nephew's life. Johnté Holliday was rushed to Clarendon Memorial Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead. The assailants fled the scene, taking a shotgun with them.
The investigation into Holliday's murder led to a swift arrest. On February 11, 2014, the Clarendon County Sheriff's Office took 23-year-old Anthony Thomas James into custody and charged him with murder. Despite this breakthrough, the case remained partially unresolved as a second suspect, described as a dark-complexioned man, approximately 5-feet-8 to 5-feet-10 inches tall and weighing between 180 and 200 pounds, remained at large. Authorities even released a composite sketch of this second individual in the hopes of generating leads from the public.
In the years following the senseless act of violence, Johnté Holliday's family has continued to seek justice for his death. His mother, LaSharon Thomas, has spoken of the enduring pain of losing her son, who had his whole life ahead of him. The tragedy was compounded by the fact that Holliday's son, Johnte Jr., was born just a few months after his father's murder, destined to grow up without ever knowing him. The family has made public pleas for anyone with information about the second suspect to come forward, holding onto the hope that one day, all those responsible for Johnté's death will be held accountable. Despite the passage of time, the search for the second man involved in the robbery and murder continues.
