In the quiet town of Cheraw, South Carolina, a night in March of 2014 turned tragic for a young father. Jamal Gainey, a 25-year-old male, was fatally shot while sitting in his car outside of Jay's Tobacco on Second Street. The incident occurred on a Sunday evening as Gainey waited for two friends who had gone into the store to buy cigarettes. This everyday errand took a devastating turn when an unknown assailant approached the vehicle.
According to the Cheraw Police Chief at the time,
the gunman ran up to the car, aimed a gun inside, and fired a single shot that struck Gainey in his right side. The shooter was described as wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt and was seen fleeing the scene in what was believed to be a white, newer model four-door sedan, possibly a Chevrolet Malibu or a Buick. Investigators were uncertain whether Gainey was specifically targeted or if the shooting was a random act of violence. In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement agencies, including the Cheraw Police Department and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the killer.
In the wake of his sudden and violent death, Jamal Gainey was remembered by his girlfriend as a loving father to their two young children, a daughter and a son. She recounted her last conversation with him, just minutes before the shooting, where she had urged him to be careful. Gainey was also described as a talented individual who enjoyed playing the piano and practicing karate. His friends and family, grief-stricken and desperate for answers, organized a vigil the following Friday, marching from the scene of the crime to the Cheraw Police Department to plead for justice for a life cut tragically short. Despite the initial investigation and public pleas for information, there have been no subsequent reports of any arrests being made in connection with the murder of Jamal Gainey, leaving a lingering sense of unresolved loss in the community.
