In the early morning hours of July 12, 2020, a violent altercation that began at a club in Marlboro County tragically culminated in the shooting death of 23-year-old Kwondashian Rah-mell Johnson in Cheraw, South Carolina. The fatal encounter unfolded at the Dizzy Gillespie Apartments, where Johnson was found inside a parked vehicle with a gunshot wound to the head.
The series of events leading to the shooting involved several individuals.
An initial dispute at a club carried over as a group, including Christopher Charles Green, John Michael Cooks, Raekwon Ellerbe, Bobby Griham, and Johnson, returned to Cheraw. Upon their arrival at the apartment complex, a confrontation ensued. Surveillance footage captured Green retrieving an assault-style rifle from his apartment and firing at the vehicle where Johnson was seated in the front passenger seat. Johnson was struck in the head and died at the scene.
The violence did not end with Johnson's death. In the immediate aftermath, Raekwon Ellerbe was seen firing a handgun towards an apartment. These shots resulted in the death of 22-year-old Quanecia Brown and injured her 6-month-old child, who was shot in the arm but was expected to recover.
The investigation led to the arrest of Christopher Charles Green, who was identified as the primary suspect in Johnson's death. He faced charges of murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, attempted murder, and discharging a firearm into a vehicle. Authorities also recovered the firearms used in the incident. Green’s father, Christopher Wendell Green, and his brother, Marcus Anthony Smith, were also charged with accessory after the fact of murder and tampering with evidence for allegedly removing the guns from the scene. The investigation into the tragic events of that morning remains ongoing.
