In the quiet community of Cheraw, South Carolina, the life of 19-year-old Johnathan Alexander Williams, an African American male, was tragically cut short on the evening of February 16, 2025. His body, bearing multiple gunshot wounds to the chest, was discovered by a resident leaving for work in the yard of a home on John Ralph Lane. The grim finding occurred at approximately 10:11 p.m., nearly three hours after neighbors reported hearing a volley of gunshots around 7:30 p.m.
The sound, unfortunately common in the area, had initially not raised significant alarm.
The Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office, in conjunction with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division launched a thorough investigation into the homicide. At the scene, crime scene investigators collected 24 spent shell casings and noted five bullet holes in the residence, painting a picture of a violent encounter. A crucial piece of information came from a witness who reported seeing a white Toyota Camry leaving the driveway around the time the shots were fired. This detail would prove vital in the swift progression of the case.
Within days, the investigation led to the arrest of three individuals who, according to authorities, were acquainted with Williams. Christopher Shane Hatcher Jr., 20, was identified as the primary suspect and charged with murder and shooting into an occupied dwelling. Two others, 19-year-old Charles Wayne Williams III and 17-year-old Gage James Lee Starling, were taken into custody and faced charges of accessory before and after the fact of murder. Despite his age, Starling was set to be charged as an adult. All three suspects were subsequently detained at the Chesterfield County Detention Center.
While the arrests brought a sense of resolution to the initial phase of the investigation, the motive behind the fatal shooting of Johnathan Williams remained under investigation. A bond hearing for the accused was scheduled to take place as the legal process began to unfold.
