In the small town of Cheraw, South Carolina, the life of 20-year-old Landon Scott Sellers was cut tragically short on the evening of May 4, 2026. Known affectionately as "Big Country" to his baseball family and "Smiley" to those who knew him best, Landon was a recent graduate of Cheraw High School with a passion for agriculture, hunting, fishing, and fast motorcycles.
His infectious happiness and warm spirit touched everyone he was around, and he was known for his boundless heart and fierce love for his friends and family. He was a protector to those he cared about, always willing to help someone in need. Landon's promising future, however, came to a violent end from a gunshot wound sustained in what authorities have described as an exchange of gunfire.
The events that led to Landon's untimely death began to unfold on a Monday night when deputies from the Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to Brangus Lane at approximately 9:39 p.m. There, they discovered a wrecked pickup truck with Landon Scott Sellers inside, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators soon determined that the incident was the culmination of an ongoing dispute. The investigation revealed that shots were fired from the vehicle Sellers was driving in the vicinity of 216 Shorthorn Road, and that additional gunfire was directed toward his truck from that same location. It is believed that Sellers was not the intended target of the shooting.
In the wake of the shooting, the Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office launched an intensive investigation that quickly led to the apprehension of several suspects. Initially, three individuals were arrested: 18-year-old Zion Elijah McRae, 19-year-old Elisjay Zayon Christian James, and 18-year-old Maurice Michael Brown Jr. McRae and James were initially charged with assault and battery in the first degree and breach of peace of an aggravated nature, while Brown Jr. was charged with obstruction of justice. As the investigation progressed, the charges against McRae and James were upgraded to murder. Another suspect, 18-year-old Jihad Ellis Lee, was also arrested and charged with murder. Maurice Michael Brown Jr.'s charges were also upgraded to murder. Additionally, Maurice Brown Sr., the father of Maurice Michael Brown Jr., surrendered to authorities and was charged with tampering with evidence. The case against these individuals is now moving through the legal system. This incident, stemming from a series of altercations, resulted in the tragic death of a young man and the arrests of several of his peers, sending shockwaves through the Cheraw community.
