In the spring of 2014, the life of a young Charleston man was abruptly cut short, setting in motion a lengthy pursuit for justice that would cross international borders. On May 22, 2014, Anthony Williams, a 23-year-old Black male, was fatally shot in a violent incident that also endangered the lives of two other individuals. The killing marked another tragic instance of gun violence in the community, prompting a thorough investigation by law enforcement to uncover the circumstances of his death
and bring those responsible to account.
The investigation into the death of Anthony Williams led authorities to identify multiple suspects they believed were involved in the coordinated attack. One of the primary suspects was identified as Anthony J. Williams-Dupree. As investigators closed in, Williams-Dupree fled the country in an attempt to evade capture. His time as a fugitive, however, came to an end when he was located and apprehended in Mexico. Following his capture, he was extradited back to South Carolina to face the serious charges awaiting him.
Upon his return to Charleston, Anthony J. Williams-Dupree was formally charged with one count of murder for the death of Anthony Williams, two counts of attempted murder, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. Another suspect, J'Von Sh'Mar Rhodes, was also arrested and faced charges of murder and two counts of attempted murder for his alleged role in the incident. The arrests marked a significant breakthrough in the case, offering a measure of hope to a grieving family and community that justice would be served for the untimely loss of a young life.
