In the late evening hours of September 26, 2019, a burst of violence shattered the night in Charleston, South Carolina, leaving a young man clinging to life. Kevin Lamar Holmes Jr., a 27-year-old Black male, was discovered inside a vehicle on Dorchester Road with a gunshot wound to his head. Emergency responders rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he would fight for nearly two weeks before ultimately succumbing to his devastating injuries on October 7, 2019.
The investigation into the
shooting quickly pointed to a suspect, 18-year-old Ke'Varius Marquis Sparks. Authorities launched a search for the teenager, who was initially wanted on charges of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Following Holmes's death, the gravity of the situation escalated, and the charges against Sparks were upgraded to murder. The pursuit for Sparks extended beyond state lines, culminating in his apprehension in Glynn County, Georgia.
After his capture, Ke'Varius Marquis Sparks was extradited back to South Carolina to face the consequences of his actions. He was held at the Dorchester County Detention Center as the legal process began. In a turn of events that brought a degree of closure to a grieving family and community, Sparks pleaded guilty to the murder of Kevin Lamar Holmes Jr. For his role in the fatal shooting, he was sentenced to serve 45 years in prison, a significant term reflecting the profound loss of a young life.
