In the early morning hours of August 20, 2022, the life of 27-year-old Trever Heyward Jr. was tragically cut short in a violent encounter on James Island, South Carolina. Responding to reports of gunfire at a bar on Grimball Road around 2 a.m., Charleston County Sheriff's deputies arrived to find Heyward on the ground with gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Heyward's death led authorities to identify a
suspect in the fatal shooting. Desmon Latrell Champagne, a 29-year-old man, was arrested in connection with the incident. He was subsequently charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. Following his arrest, Champagne was booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center.
The community and Heyward's loved ones were left to mourn his sudden and violent death. A Celebration of Life Service was held for him on August 26, 2022, at St. James Presbyterian Church, where family and friends gathered to honor his memory. He is remembered by his parents, siblings, grandparents, and his two daughters, Rylan and Sa'vannah.
