In the early morning hours of Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2020, the life of 15-year-old Mikell McKelvey was tragically cut short in Charleston, South Carolina. A sophomore and promising football player at West Ashley High School, the young Black male was discovered shot to death inside the Palmilla Apartments on West Ashley River Road. Charleston Police responded to the scene at approximately 3:50 a.m., where McKelvey was pronounced dead.
His death, which occurred just days before his sixteenth birthday, sent shockwaves through his community, leaving his family, teammates, and friends heartbroken.
Mikell, known affectionately as 'Kell' to his loved ones, was remembered as a determined and kind-hearted young man. Beyond the football field, he was an entrepreneur with his own lawn care service and a part-time employee at McDonald's. His generosity was evident when he spent his first paycheck to buy pizzas and water for the homeless. His mother, Aphrodesia McKelvey, discovered her son in the apartment complex parking lot, a traumatic experience that she has described as a pain she wouldn't wish on her worst enemy.
The investigation into Mikell McKelvey's death was launched as a homicide by the Charleston Police Department. Despite their efforts and identifying potential persons of interest, the case has grown cold. As of late 2021, authorities acknowledged they had beliefs about who was involved but lacked sufficient evidence to press charges. The case remains an unsolved homicide, and no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. The community continues to await answers and justice for the untimely death of a young man with a promising future.
