In the summer of 2018, the life of 15-year-old Talekuz Williams was tragically cut short. On the evening of July 15th, Talekuz, a male student at West Ashley High School, was with a group of other young men near the basketball courts of an apartment complex in Charleston, South Carolina. What began as a dice game among teenagers took a devastating turn, escalating into a violent dispute that would claim two lives.
Gunshots shattered the evening air, and when police responded to the
scene, they discovered Talekuz and 17-year-old Juquel Young on the ground, both having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Paramedics arrived, but it was too late; both teenagers were pronounced dead at the scene, leaving a community in shock and mourning the senseless loss of two young lives. The tragedy was compounded by the fact that Talekuz had previously lost an older brother to gun violence.
In the days that followed, the Charleston Police Department, with the assistance of U.S. Marshals, identified and apprehended a suspect. Zamere Raeguel Treawn Brown, a 17-year-old from Johns Island who had at one point been a classmate of both victims, was taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with murder in connection with the death of Talekuz Williams and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. The investigation into the death of Juquel Young was reported to be ongoing. At the time of the shooting, Brown was already out on bond for a prior weapons charge.
The legal proceedings against Zamere Brown unfolded over the subsequent years. While initially charged with murder, court records show that on January 4, 2022, the case concluded with a conviction for the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. Brown was sentenced to a term of eight years in prison for his role in the death of Talekuz Williams.
