In the summer of 2015, the life of 28-year-old Demeatrius Raynard Smalls was tragically cut short by gun violence in Charleston, South Carolina. On July 7th of that year, Smalls was fatally shot in the West Ashley area of the city, a place he called home. His death was officially ruled a homicide, prompting an investigation by the Charleston Police Department.
