In the late evening hours of March 31, 2016, the bustling Ravenel Bridge in Charleston, South Carolina, became the scene of a somber discovery. Authorities were called to the pedestrian lane where they found the bodies of Charles William Best Jr. and Lindsey Bedenk. Best, a 30-year-old Caucasian male, and Bedenk were found with what appeared to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
Emergency services transported both individuals to the Medical University of South Carolina, where they were
pronounced dead. The initial investigation by the Mt. Pleasant Police Department quickly pointed towards a tragic and coordinated act. Handguns were discovered at their sides, and the presence of suicide notes solidified the theory of a suicide pact. It was later learned that the two had met while attending mental health counseling, suggesting a shared struggle that culminated in their final moments on the bridge.
The autopsies confirmed that both Best and Bedenk died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the mouth.
