On a Sunday evening in late December 2014, 24-year-old Black man Don Eric Skinner Jr. was on Charleston’s peninsula when gunfire tore through the neighborhood near President and Line streets. Around 6:20 p.m., police were called to the scene of a shooting, where they found him critically wounded. He was rushed to the Medical University of South Carolina, but despite efforts to save him, he died from his injuries later that night.
