In the warm evening of June 17, 2015, Reverend Daniel Lee Simmons Sr., a 74-year-old Black male, settled in for a Wednesday night Bible study at the historic Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, South Carolina. A retired pastor, he remained a devoted member of the ministerial staff, and his presence at these weekly gatherings was a familiar comfort to the other attendees. That evening, however, a stranger would shatter the sanctity of their worship.
