In the fall of 2015, in West Columbia, South Carolina, a young man's life was brought to an abrupt and violent end. On October 12th, the body of 23-year-old Jose Antonio 'Alex' Guerrero Cano was discovered by one of his roommates inside their shared home on Steele Drive. An autopsy would later reveal that he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, with the fatal shot striking his heart.
The news of his death sent ripples through his community, leaving behind a wife and two children.
Originally from Mexico, Jose's brother informed authorities that he was an undocumented immigrant who was making a life for his family in the area. He was known to be a hardworking individual, employed at the San Jose Restaurant in nearby Lexington. His death was quickly classified as a homicide, prompting an investigation by local law enforcement to piece together the events that led to the tragic shooting.
The investigation into his death led authorities to one of the individuals he lived with. Jeremy Junior Head, who shared the West Columbia house with Jose and others, was arrested and charged in connection with the death. Following his arrest, Head was held at the Lexington County Detention Center. The motive for the shooting was not immediately released to the public as the case prepared to move through the legal system.
