On New Year's Day in 2017, a tragic event unfolded in a West Columbia, South Carolina home, claiming the lives of four individuals, including 4-year-old Elijah Chavez. The young boy, along with his 1-year-old sister, Ezra Chavez, and their 26-year-old mother, Marissa Hope Reynoso, were found deceased in their Old Barnwell Road residence. The investigation concluded that this was a murder-suicide perpetrated by the children's father, 25-year-old Jorge Luis Chavez.
That evening, Marissa
Reynoso made a desperate 911 call to report that her ex-boyfriend was breaking into her home. During the call, she was heard screaming, 'He's got a gun,' before the line went silent. Responding deputies from the Lexington County Sheriff's Department arrived within a minute to a grim scene. Inside the master bedroom, they discovered the bodies of Marissa, Elijah, Ezra, and Jorge Chavez. All four had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
Autopsy results later revealed that Elijah Chavez died from a gunshot wound to the back. His sister, Ezra, suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the chest, and their mother, Marissa, died from multiple gunshot wounds to her chest. Jorge Chavez died from a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The weapon used in the killings was a 9mm handgun that had been reported stolen years prior.
Further investigation into the family's history brought to light previous domestic disturbances. Law enforcement had been called to the residence on at least two prior occasions in the months leading up to the tragedy. In November 2016, Marissa had reported that Jorge Chavez was in her driveway and appeared suicidal, telling her, 'I'll see you in heaven,' while showing her a rope. The following month, deputies responded to another call when Chavez showed up unannounced and was knocking on her bedroom window. He fled when she called the police. Marissa had reportedly moved to Lexington County from North Carolina to get away from Chavez, with whom she had been in a five-year relationship. Since the perpetrator, Jorge Chavez, took his own life at the scene, there were no arrests or further suspects sought in connection with this devastating murder-suicide.
