In the late hours of November 18, 2016, a tragic incident unfolded in Greenwood, South Carolina, resulting in the untimely death of a local teenager. Markevious K. Jackson, a 16-year-old Black male student at Greenwood High School, was found lying on Meadow Street suffering from a single gunshot wound. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported him to Self Regional Healthcare, but despite medical intervention, he succumbed to his injuries.
The loss of the young man, known affectionately by friends and family as "Boona," sent a wave of grief through the community and his school, where students and faculty mourned his passing.
Law enforcement officials launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, which initially appeared to be a homicide. As detectives pieced together the events of that Friday night, they determined that the discharge of the weapon might not have been an act of malicious intent but rather a reckless accident. Authorities discovered that another teenager had been present at the scene and was handling a firearm when the fatal shot was fired.
Nearly two weeks after the incident, on December 1, 2016, police detained a 15-year-old boy in connection with Jackson’s death. According to the police report, the juvenile suspect claimed he had fired the weapon in an attempt to scare away a dog, but the bullet unintentionally struck Jackson instead. Due to the suspect's status as a minor, his identity was not released to the public. He was subsequently held at the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and charged with involuntary manslaughter as well as a weapons violation, marking a somber conclusion to the investigation.
