In the winter of 2016, the life of 38-year-old Quadeedrah Clinton was tragically cut short in a wave of violence that underscored a history of domestic turmoil. On the evening of December 30th, in North Charleston, South Carolina, Clinton was found dead, the victim of a fatal shooting. Her death marked a grim conclusion to a series of disturbances that had repeatedly drawn the attention of law enforcement.
In the months leading up to her death, police had been called to intervene in
domestic disputes between Clinton and her boyfriend, Bernard Mackey, on at least five separate occasions. The night of the fatal incident was no different, with three separate calls made to the police. Two of these calls were reportedly made by Mackey himself, who claimed Clinton would not leave his residence.
Following the discovery of Clinton's body outside an apartment, officers found Mackey asleep in his car nearby. He was subsequently arrested in connection with her death. The North Charleston Police Department faced questions regarding their handling of the prior domestic dispute calls. In response, a department spokesperson explained that in a previous instance, the situation had appeared to be resolved when Clinton left the apartment of her own accord. They emphasized that officers must make judgments based on the information and circumstances they encounter at the time of a call.
The family of Quadeedrah Clinton expressed their profound grief and raised concerns, suggesting that with Mackey's history, more preventive measures could have been taken. They believe that a different approach by law enforcement might have saved her life.
