Jalisa Catlin, a 32-year-old female, was killed on January 22, 2021, in what authorities described as a domestic-related shooting in North Charleston, South Carolina. The incident that ended her life took place at a gas station, leaving behind a grieving family and questions about the justice system.
The man identified in connection with her death was Tyrone Robinson III.
According to a sworn affidavit from a North Charleston Police detective, Robinson shot and killed Catlin with a handgun he had in his sweatshirt. However, he was never charged with her murder. Robinson claimed that he and Catlin were arguing while he was visiting with their children when she threatened him with a handgun. He stated that he felt in imminent peril and shot her in self-defense. Catlin's family, however, does not believe his account of what happened that day.
Following the shooting, Robinson fled the scene, leaving two of his children unattended in Catlin's vehicle. Less than two months after her death, he was charged with possession of a handgun by a persons unlawful and two counts of unlawful conduct toward a child in connection with the incident. Catlin's family expressed their frustration and pain, feeling that the system had failed them by not pursuing a murder charge against Robinson. Her sister described their relationship as volatile.
Court records reveal that Tyrone Robinson III has an extensive criminal history dating back to 2001, with guilty pleas for charges including grand larceny, burglary, assaulting an officer, assault and battery, and forgery. He also had a history of domestic incidents with a different victim, including a 2014 arrest for allegedly grabbing a woman by her throat and slamming her into a hotel wall, holding her against her will, and threatening her with a gun. While out on bond for that incident, he was accused of forcing his way into a home and holding two victims at knifepoint and gunpoint, and severely beating his girlfriend.
