On a summer evening in Greenville, South Carolina, a tragic series of events led to the death of 25-year-old Candy Esther Rosario. On July 14, 2017, Rosario was involved in a heated altercation with a man identified as Ramiro Bravo Ramirez. The dispute escalated, spilling onto White Horse Road near the intersection with Lilly Street. What began as a confrontation turned into a desperate chase as Rosario fled from Ramirez.
As she ran across the street, Ramirez fired a gun, striking her in the head. Emergency services arrived and transported her to Greenville Memorial Hospital, but her injuries proved fatal, and she died just over an hour later.
The violence did not end with the shooting of Rosario. When Greenville County sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene, they found Ramirez still armed. He proceeded to open fire on the deputies, who returned fire. The exchange was witnessed by terrified employees of a nearby funeral home, who were forced to lock themselves in a safe room for their own protection. The confrontation came to a grim conclusion when Ramirez turned the gun on himself, taking his own life at the scene.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division took over the investigation, a standard procedure for any officer-involved shooting. The deputies who had been on the scene were placed on administrative leave while the investigation was conducted. The coroner's office later confirmed that Ramirez's death was a suicide. With the primary suspect in Candy Esther Rosario's death also deceased, no further arrests were made in connection with the case.
