In the summer of 2018, the life of Veronica Elliott, a 31-year-old Black/African American woman, was tragically cut short in Greenville, South Carolina. On the night of July 13th, she was at the Crestwood Forest Apartments near Poinsett Highway when violence erupted. Witnesses reported seeing individuals exit a vehicle in the parking lot and begin shooting into a breezeway, striking Elliott and a man who was with her.
Earlier that same evening, another shooting had occurred on Camelot
Lane, and authorities came to believe that the same perpetrators were responsible for both incidents. Elliott was rushed to Greenville Memorial Hospital with gunshot wounds to her torso, but she sadly succumbed to her injuries during surgery. Investigators later determined that the shooters had been searching for a person known as 'JB.' When they were unable to find him, they opened fire indiscriminately into the apartment building. Surveillance footage captured two shooters emerging from a vehicle and demanding to know the whereabouts of 'JB' before they started shooting. In the ensuing chaos, the building was riddled with bullets, and as she attempted to flee, Elliott was struck in the back.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Greenville County Sheriff's Office faced significant challenges in their investigation. Many potential witnesses were uncooperative, and the leads that were generated ultimately led to dead ends. Even the intended target of the shooters, 'JB,' was eventually located but did not provide any useful information to the authorities. This lack of cooperation has been a major obstacle to solving the case and bringing those responsible for Veronica Elliott's death to justice.
To date, the case remains unsolved, and no arrests have been made. The only description of the suspects that has been released is that of a male driving a dark-colored sedan. Veronica Elliott's family continues to hold out hope for answers and closure. Her brother described her as a loving mother with a big heart and a warm smile. Community activists have joined her family in publicly appealing for anyone with information to come forward and assist in the investigation. The senseless act of violence that took her life has left a lasting impact on her family and the Greenville community.
