In the winter of 2015, the life of a young woman from Greenville, South Carolina, was tragically cut short. Shamese Nicole Logan, a 23-year-old Black female, was fatally shot on the night of February 2nd while sitting in the driver's seat of her car on Mayflower Street. Her death, which officially occurred on February 3, 2015, was the violent outcome of a robbery.
The investigation into her murder swiftly identified two brothers, Jahru Harold Smith and Bobby Leon Smith, as the
perpetrators. It was revealed that the brothers had planned to rob Logan. During the commission of the robbery, a struggle began, which resulted in Shamese being shot and killed. The motive for this violent act was reportedly a dispute over crack cocaine.
Law enforcement was quick to act. Bobby Leon Smith was apprehended on the same night as the shooting. His brother, Jahru Harold Smith, managed to evade capture for ten days before he was also taken into custody. The Thirteenth Circuit Solicitor's Office prosecuted the case, with Assistant Solicitors Brian Moroney and Jeff Weston representing the state.
Both brothers faced serious charges for their roles in the crime. Jahru Harold Smith was ultimately convicted of murder, armed robbery, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Bobby Leon Smith was found guilty of armed robbery, accessory after the fact of a felony, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. The trial, presided over by Judge Robin B. Stilwell, concluded with both brothers receiving life sentences in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring they would be held accountable for the senseless death of Shamese Logan.
