On a cold December day in 1999, the life of 30-year-old Karen Moore Hayden was tragically cut short in Greenville, South Carolina. It was December 22nd, and Hayden was diligently working at the Greenville-Pelham Florist on Rutherford Road, surrounded by the festive arrangements of the holiday season. The day took a dark turn when a concerned customer found the flower shop unexpectedly locked with the lights off and a 'closed' sign displayed in the window.
This unsettling discovery prompted an employee to check on the store, leading to a gruesome scene in the back room. There, Karen Hayden was found on the floor, her life taken in a brutal act of violence; her throat had been slit.
The initial investigation into the shocking murder of the young florist left detectives with few leads. However, the scene bore a chilling resemblance to another unsolved murder that had occurred just months earlier. On June 26, 1999, Jonathan Lara, a 26-year-old employee at a local RadioShack, was found dead in the back room of his store. He had been restrained and fatally stabbed in the neck. The similarities between the two homicides suggested a possible connection, but the perpetrator remained elusive, casting a shadow of fear over the community.
The break in the case came swiftly and violently. The day after Karen Hayden's murder, on December 23rd, a 28-year-old man named Dallen Forrest Bounds embarked on a violent spree. He broke into the Easley home of his ex-girlfriend, Sandra Ott, and her ex-husband, Timothy Ott. In a tragic turn of events, Bounds shot and killed both Sandra and Timothy. This double homicide triggered a massive 12-hour manhunt, during which Bounds took hostages in another home. As law enforcement closed in, Bounds ultimately took his own life, turning his gun on himself. In the aftermath of the manhunt and Bounds' suicide, an anonymous tip connected him to the unsolved murders of Karen Hayden and Jonathan Lara. Subsequent investigations by the Greenville detectives were able to definitively link Bounds to all four killings. Authorities also arrested Cassandra Laster, a former roommate of Bounds, in connection with the murder of Jonathan Lara.
