In the fall of 2025, Kenoshia Yvonne Wheeler, a 29-year-old Black/African American woman, was building a life in Greenville, South Carolina, filled with plans for the future. Known affectionately as 'Nosha,' she was passionate about her catering business, 'Chef K on Wheels,' and was looking forward to her upcoming wedding. She and her partner of eight years, Deandra Dontia James, had gotten engaged in 2020 and were planning their life together.
Just two weeks after her 29th birthday, a tragic event cut her aspirations short.
On the night of October 2, 2025, Kenoshia and Deandra were seen out at a local bar and grill, appearing to be enjoying each other's company like any other couple. However, upon returning to their Beattie Street home, a verbal argument broke out between them. The disagreement escalated, and the night took a fatal turn. Around 10:30 p.m., the Greenville County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call about an unresponsive female. When deputies arrived at the residence, they found Kenoshia suffering from at least one gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Kenoshia's death quickly focused on her partner. Authorities arrested 33-year-old Deandra Dontia James in connection with the shooting. James was subsequently charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Following the arrest, James was booked into the Greenville County Detention Center and was denied bond. The community and friends of the couple were left in shock, struggling to comprehend how a long-term relationship that was heading towards marriage could end in such a violent and tragic manner. The case is now proceeding through the criminal justice system as Kenoshia's family mourns the sudden and profound loss of a loved one.
