In the late summer of 2018, the life of 29-year-old David Thomas Tranah was tragically cut short in a violent encounter in Seneca, South Carolina. On the evening of September 10th, the sound of gunfire prompted a resident on Padgett Street to call 911. When law enforcement arrived, they discovered the bodies of Tranah and another man, 54-year-old Timothy Wayne Caldwell, in what was described as a double homicide.
The investigation into the deaths of Tranah and Caldwell led authorities to
an area known locally as 'The Compound,' a place with a reputation for drug activity, theft, and homelessness. It was in this troubled setting that the events leading to the two men's deaths unfolded. The day after the discovery of the bodies, an 18-year-old named Steven Lee Reynolds was apprehended at a residence on Coffee Road. Investigators determined that Reynolds had a history with Caldwell and had gone to 'The Compound' to collect on a debt, believed to be related to drugs. During this confrontation, Reynolds shot and killed both Caldwell and Tranah.
Reynolds was subsequently charged with two counts of murder, armed robbery, and malicious injury to personal property. At the time of his arrest for the murders, he also had outstanding warrants for the distribution of methamphetamine and heroin. In November of 2019, Steven Lee Reynolds pleaded guilty to the murders of David Thomas Tranah and Timothy Wayne Caldwell and was sentenced to 35 years in prison. Another individual, Jeremy Alexander Trotter, was also implicated in the case. He pleaded guilty to charges of voluntary manslaughter, armed robbery, and malicious injury for his role in the events and received a 15-year prison sentence. The solicitor in the case noted that the violent deaths were a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of the drug epidemic on communities.
