In the early morning hours of October 20, 2018, the life of 25-year-old Jerri Lynn Sigmon was tragically cut short in a home on Norman Street in Columbia, South Carolina. Responders found the young Caucasian woman with a gunshot wound to her head. She was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.
Initially, the man living with her, 32-year-old Michael Paul Griffin, claimed that Sigmon had been shot during a home break-in.
However, as the Columbia Police Department delved deeper into the investigation, inconsistencies in his account began to emerge. Their suspicions led them to arrest Griffin in connection with Sigmon's death. He was subsequently charged with murder and possession of a stolen weapon.
The case against Michael Paul Griffin proceeded to trial, where the narrative of a home invasion unraveled. After a trial, a Richland County jury took only 45 minutes to deliberate before finding him guilty of the murder of Jerri Lynn Sigmon. For his crime, Griffin was sentenced to serve 46 years in prison, bringing a measure of justice to the family of the woman he had fatally shot.
