In a tragic turn of events, 38-year-old Nivia NaTaura Johnson was found deceased in her Columbia, South Carolina, home on Saturday, June 8, 2019. Law enforcement discovered her body after being called to her residence on Summit Townes Way for a welfare check around 8 p.m. An autopsy later confirmed that Johnson died from multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body.
The investigation into her death quickly revealed a grim scenario.
Alongside Johnson, authorities found the body of 39-year-old David C. Bailey of Greenville. The Richland County Coroner's Office determined that Bailey died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Based on the evidence at the scene, investigators concluded that Bailey shot and killed Johnson before taking his own life in what was ruled a murder-suicide.
Johnson was a respected individual who had dedicated her career to federal law enforcement. She had served for 18 years with the United States Secret Service before joining the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives as an Industry Operations Investigator. Her sudden and violent death left her family, friends, and colleagues to mourn the loss of a dedicated public servant. The motive behind the tragic incident was not publicly released.
